Mobile money vendors have threatened to withdraw their services if nothing is done about the recent spike in attacks against their operatives.

Mobile money vendors have threatened to withdraw their services if nothing is done about the recent spike in attacks against their operatives.

According to the association, their members have suffered over 200 armed robbery attacks since January 2021, including the latest- an attack by a gunman who shot and killed an agent at Akosari near Koforidua on Saturday, June 19, 2021. This was revealed in an interview with TV3 and the General Secretary of the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana, Evans Ottufour, monitored by MyGhanadaily.

He further mentioned that the attacks on their vendors are no more a secret but information known to all citizens, therefore, called on all to approach the issue holistically.

Calling on the government’s intervention, he had this to say;  ‘It’s time  for the government to step in halfway so that they can control the high increase in robbery attacks on mobile money agents.’

Meanwhile, Mr Ottufour lamented the poor response from the police despite several attempts to reach them. He also advised his fellow agents to avoid being predictable and over-reliable in order to prevent robbers from predicting their moves.

Another security measure he asked the agents to employ was to close by 6:00 pm in order to reduce the attacks, instead of the 24/7 schedule.
