There has been a clash between some students of the Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall and the securities of the University of Ghana, Legon Tuesday morning.

The clash was as a result of an attempt by the campus security personnel to stop the students from holding a joint press conference against the recent decision by the management to review residential status of continuing students of the two halls.

According to the University Security, which was later beefed up by personnel of the Ghana Police Service, the students had no permission to hold the presser.

The students wanted to express disagreement with the management decision, which was communicated in a communique on Wednesday, December 14.

According to the decision, all continuing students of the Commonwealth Hall, an all-male hall of residence, and continuing male students of Mensa Sarbah Hall will not return to their halls nor to any of the traditional halls.

“They are to be randomly assigned to available rooms in any of the UGEL and private hostels,” the communique said.

“Continuing female students of Mensah Sarbah Hall and students with special needs in both halls will not be affected by this measure,” it added.

The decision was taken by the University Council following incessant clashes between students of the two halls, the last being on Friday, August 5.
