Afram Publications Limited marked International Mother Tongue Day on February 23 with a special reading session in Ga and Twi for pupils of Theorose School at Tantra Hills, Accra.
The annual event, organized to promote the use of local languages in education, featured students reading from selected publications to showcase their skills and interest in learning through their mother tongues.
Dr. Kwabena Ekremet of Afram Publications explained that Ga and Twi were chosen because they are taught in schools across the Greater Accra Region under Ghana Education Service guidelines. He emphasized the importance of preserving indigenous languages, warning that local dialects risk extinction if neglected in favor of English or other foreign languages.
The initiative, held every year, aims to raise awareness about the value of mother tongues and plans to expand to more schools in the future.
