Fishermen operating near Senya Bereku in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region were attacked by armed men during a night expedition.

The assailants fired warning shots, held the fishermen at gunpoint, and stole seven outboard motors, generators, and other valuables, leaving more than 50 fishermen stranded about 4,000 metres offshore.

Eyewitness Elder Samuel Fetteh reported that the attackers overpowered the fishermen and carried out the robbery without resistance.

District Chief Executive Kalala Nyamkye confirmed the incident, noting that a rescue boat was dispatched to bring the stranded fishermen safely back to shore.

Deputy Minister for Works and Housing and MP for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh, added that the Inspector-General of Police has deployed military and Marine Police personnel to track down the suspects.

The incident has heightened fears among coastal fishing communities, sparking renewed calls for stronger security patrols to safeguard livelihoods and ensure safety at sea.
