The leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have started arriving in Accra for Tuesday’s historic launch of the 50th anniversary of the bloc.

The Heads of State and Government of 15 West African Countries established the ECOWAS when they signed the ECOWAS Treaty on the 28th of May 1975 in Lagos, Nigeria.

Among the first to arrive in Accra for the summit was Mr Muhammed B. S. Jallow, Vice President of The Gambia.

Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, who received Mr Jallow at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, reiterated that as always, Ghana was ready to make the region proud.

President John Dramani Mahama will host the ECOWAS@50 Anniversary Celebration launch at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The anniversary launch will not merely be a ceremonial event but a strategic opportunity to celebrate the achievements chalked by the sub-regional bloc over the past five decades.

President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who chairs the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, will be in attendance

All the heads of state of ECOWAS are expected to attend the Golden Jubilee launch in Accra, as well as representatives of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger who recently exited the sub-regional bloc.
