Ghana Medical Trust Fund Pays GH¢1.14m for Heart Surgeries for Eight Children

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund has disbursed a total of GH¢1,141,500 to support life-saving heart surgeries for eight children receiving treatment at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Out of the eight cases, five children from various parts of the country have recently been referred to Korle Bu and are currently undergoing preparations for urgent cardiothoracic surgeries.

The children hail from the Northern, Savannah, Bono East, Western North, Western and Greater Accra regions, underscoring the nationwide impact of the Fund’s intervention.

Health officials note that the beneficiaries are among children who, under normal circumstances, should be in classrooms and playgrounds rather than hospital wards. However, their medical conditions require immediate surgical attention—care that would have been financially out of reach for many of their families without support.

The intervention by the Ghana Medical Trust Fund has therefore brought renewed hope to affected families, offering a lifeline at a critical moment.

The sponsorship forms part of 50 pilot cases being supported ahead of the Fund’s full rollout in April. Through this pilot phase, the Trust Fund aims to ensure that critically ill patients—particularly children—are not denied essential care due to financial constraints.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is expected to play a key role in strengthening access to specialised healthcare services, especially for vulnerable patients requiring high-cost medical interventions.
