The government has instructed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to accelerate the rollout of fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks, with a target of reaching 70% population coverage by Ghana’s 70th Independence Day in 2027.

At the launch of the NCA’s 30th anniversary in Accra on Wednesday, February 25, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, announced that cabinet has approved a bold policy to democratize 5G deployment. He noted that the ministry will soon issue directives to the NCA to begin preparations for a spectrum auction in the coming weeks.

The regulator will oversee both wholesale and network-led models to achieve the ambitious coverage target. Minister George emphasized: “Our vision is to achieve 70% of 5G population density coverage by the 70th independence celebration of our nation next year. The regulator has barely a year to roll out 5G using both models and meet this goal.”

Despite the steep timeline, he expressed confidence in the resilience and capability of the NCA to deliver.
