Dr. Richard Fiadomor, the President of Chamber for Local Governance (ChaLog), has stated that it is a pity that over 200 applicants have applied for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) position from the Volta Region.

A total of 279 from 18 Districts in the Volta Region have so far applied to be for the Municipal Chief Executive position which was quite very high. Dr. Fiadomor, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, expressed worry about the high number of applicants from the various Districts compare to the rest of the 15 regions in the country.

“l feel pity for the region about how many people have applied for the MMDCE position, and this tells you that something is wrong somewhere,” he said. He said that many party faithful, who attained the qualifications, felt that the only way they could be compensated was to become MMDCEs to serve the people from the grassroots. Dr. Fiadomor said that lack of better jobs and employment within the Region could be the main reason many were rushing for the position but not for the love, care, and progress of the various areas.

“The issue here is, why do you think 286 people have applied for the MMDCE position in just 18 Districts in Volta Region, it is a clear indication that many people need jobs, a testament for the large numbers. Dr. Fiadomor urged the current John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to prioritise job creation in the Volta Region to mitigate the unemployment rate as compared to other regions.

He rated the performance of the immediate past MMDCEs in the Volta Region on average mark of 40 per cent and urged the vetting committee to select competent and dedicated persons for the job. He advised the vetting committee to avoid any external pressure from Members of Parliament, Chiefs and other party hierarchy and let the process to be transparent and fair to avoid selecting wrong candidates for the MMDCEs position.

Dr. Fiadomor said various assemblies should endorse upright and dedicated persons to champion collaboration and development in the communities for better jobs and development. Meanwhile, Adaklu District has eight applicants, Afadjato South 17, Agotime Ziope eight, Akatsi South seven, Anlo district 20, Central Tongu 26, South Tongu 13.

The rest were North Tongu district who has highest applicants of 40, Ho Central 24, Ho, West 15, Hohoe 14, Ketu South 18, Ketu North 13, Keta 16, Kpando nine, North Dayi 21, South Dayi 13, with Akatsi North recorded the least number of people four application.
