The Nzema East Municipal Assembly in Ghana’s Western Region has been chosen as one of 300 cities worldwide to participate in the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund, a global programme aimed at supporting young people to develop and implement climate solutions in their communities.

Municipal Chief Executive Herbert Kuah Dickson announced the selection, describing it as a significant opportunity to place young people at the centre of climate innovation, leadership, and local resilience efforts.

Through the initiative, the assembly will receive funding and technical assistance to engage young people aged 15 to 24 in designing and carrying out climate-related projects that align with local development priorities.

The programme will also include innovation competitions where youth can submit ideas focused on environmental sustainability. Successful proposals will be supported with funding of up to $40,000, along with technical guidance from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Projects under the fund are expected to address issues such as improving public spaces, strengthening infrastructure, reducing disaster risks, and enhancing community resilience to climate change impacts.

According to the MCE, the initiative represents more than financial assistance, stressing that it is a chance to empower young people to actively contribute to local development and environmental protection.

He also noted that municipalities that successfully implement early projects may qualify for additional funding of up to $50,000 to expand youth participation and scale up impact.

Chief Executive Officer of Bloomberg Philanthropies, Patricia E. Harris, said the programme is designed to help local governments work closely with young people to address climate challenges while strengthening trust between communities and authorities.

The Nzema East Municipal Assembly is expected to open applications for youth-led climate projects in June 2026, encouraging young people in the area to submit innovative ideas that support environmental sustainability and community development.
