The acting Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), in the Volta Region, Ebenezer Azuma says his outfit has begun distributing relief items to victims of tidal waves that hit parts of Aflao and Keta in the Volta Region.

Speaking in an interview, the Acting NADMO boss said though his office has commenced the distribution of items to the victims, what they have is not enough and will welcome donations from Corporate bodies and individuals who will want to assist them.

“I can say we have over 80% assessment done on 240 plus households and in terms of the number of persons affected we have little above 4,000.” We are giving relief items to almost all the affected areas of Havedzi, Kedzie where the incident hit them so hard.

“We are distributing food items and non-food items, with the non-food items what we are giving them include mattress, washing bowls, used-clothing, blankets and with the food we have rice and cooking oil.”

We are also housing those displaced at community centres and some are also with churches that we have spoken to,” Mr Azuma stated.

Some victims disclosed that their livelihood is really bad as they cannot go fishing because their nets are destroyed.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) for the Ketu South Municipality was assessing the situation with respect to what relief items to provide for the affected residents.

“A few minutes ago when the newly confirmed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) came here he told us that he had spoken with the Regional Minister; and the situation demanded that they level the ground. So that the people can start putting up structures,” he disclosed.

However, the Regional NADMO boss stated that the government is committed to working on the sea-defence project in order to avert the situation in the future.

“It is necessary that we add our voice in a positive way for the sea defense to be completed. I think the government is committed to this project. Yesterday, 8th November 2021, the Works and Housing Minister, Asenso Boakye addressed the media on the sea-defense project. The government is highly committed but it is all about funding,” he reiterated.

On education, Mr. Azuma revealed that one of the school’s in the area have been completely washed away by the tidal waves.

“So temporarily, we have spoken to the Director of Education for the Anlo District that we need to have a place for the students to have classes for now. Especially for the Form 3 students who will be writing their BECE very soon,” he added.
