A total of 31 students from communities in the Amansie West and Amansie South districts are currently benefiting from the Asanko Scholarship Programme, an educational support initiative designed to help students pursue tertiary education through financial assistance.
Now in its second year, the programme supports students enrolled in different tertiary institutions across Ghana. This year, 15 new beneficiaries were added, while 16 students from the first batch continue to receive funding for their studies.
Each beneficiary receives financial support of up to GH₵10,000, covering tuition fees, accommodation, and other approved academic-related expenses.
The scholarship initiative is part of Asanko Gold Ghana’s five-year Social and Economic Development Plan (SEDEP), which seeks to promote education and sustainable development within its host communities.
One of the beneficiaries, Millicent Frimpong from Manso Fahiakobo, who is studying for a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, said the scholarship arrived at a critical moment, as her family had struggled financially to keep her in school through loans and sacrifices.
Speaking on behalf of the mine’s General Manager, Social Responsibility Manager Dr. Isaac Kwakye explained that the programme aims to eliminate financial challenges that often prevent brilliant but underprivileged students from accessing tertiary education.
According to him, the initiative is intended to reduce the burden on students and families while encouraging hardworking young people to continue their academic pursuits.
Beneficiaries are selected through a joint process involving District Education Directorates, traditional authorities, District Assemblies, and Asanko Gold Ghana to ensure fairness and equal representation across the company’s host communities.
The District Chief Executive for Amansie West, Prince Manu Morrison, also urged students to remain dedicated to their education, noting that learning plays a vital role in creating opportunities and driving community development.
This year’s award ceremony reflected the programme’s continued effort to support existing beneficiaries while opening doors for a new group of students to further their education.
