The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has started placing new public waste bins in the Central Business District (CBD) to promote proper waste disposal and enhance sanitation.
The initiative comes after a donation of 20 bins by Duraplast on Tuesday, March 17, aimed at supporting the Assembly’s efforts to improve waste management in the city. The bins have been installed along the busy Kinbu to CMB corridor, a high-traffic area known for significant waste generation.
Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, explained that the bins were positioned to serve traders, pedestrians, and roadside workers, with sanitation staff and trucks ensuring daily collection. He emphasized that the bins are not for household waste, warning that anyone caught disposing of domestic refuse in them would face arrest and prosecution.
The Mayor encouraged the public to use the bins responsibly and called on corporate organizations to partner with the AMA to maintain a cleaner city.
At the handover, Duraplast Executive Director, Mireille Hitti, highlighted the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and national development. She stressed that proper waste disposal is vital for public health, civic pride, and environmental protection, and expressed confidence that the bins would foster responsible behavior.
Ms. Hitti also lauded AMA’s leadership and pledged continued support for similar sanitation initiatives in the future.
