The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued statutory notices to developers of unauthorised structures, including shipping containers placed along Obonu Street in the North Kaneshie area, demanding explanations as to why the structures should not be altered or pulled down.
The notices, dated January 19, 2026, were issued under Section 106 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), and instruct the affected developers to submit written responses to the Metropolitan Chief Executive by February 2, 2026. The developments were described as unauthorised and in breach of existing development control regulations.
According to the AMA, developers or their authorised representatives are required to respond in writing as part of the statutory process. Failure to comply could result in enforcement action, with the developers held liable for all costs associated with altering or removing the structures.
The move forms part of the Assembly’s ongoing efforts to enforce planning regulations and address unauthorised developments across Accra as city authorities intensify measures to ensure orderly urban development.
