The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a series of strict disciplinary measures following the controversial and chaotic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. Despite being officially confirmed as champions, Senegal emerged as the most heavily sanctioned team.
Senegal’s head coach, Pape Bouna Thiaw, received the toughest individual punishment, with a five-match suspension and a $100,000 fine for unsporting conduct. CAF ruled that his role in leading a 14-minute walk-off by his players in protest of a late VAR penalty decision seriously damaged the image of African football.
In addition, the Senegalese Football Federation was fined a total of $615,000. This amount includes $300,000 for crowd trouble, another $300,000 for the misconduct of players and officials, and $15,000 for yellow cards picked up during the match. Players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr were also banned for two matches each for inappropriate behaviour towards referee Jean-Jacques Ndala.
Morocco, the host nation, was also punished with fines totalling $315,000. These penalties covered issues such as the conduct of ball boys, team indiscipline, and the use of laser pointers by supporters. CAF also dismissed Morocco’s appeal, which sought to have Senegal stripped of the title, thereby officially confirming Senegal as the 2025 AFCON champions.
