A medical doctor has filed a lawsuit at the High Court in Accra against three major public hospitals, several healthcare professionals, and the Attorney General over alleged medical negligence that reportedly led to the death of her brother following a road accident.

Matilda Amissah is seeking GH¢20 million in damages, acting as administratrix of the estate of her late brother, Charles Henry Amissah, a 29-year-old engineer with Promasidor Ghana Limited.

According to the statement of claim, the deceased was involved in a hit-and-run accident on the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Overpass on February 6, 2026. He was initially taken by the National Ambulance Service to the Ghana Police Hospital, where admission was allegedly refused due to lack of bed space, despite his critical condition.

The ambulance reportedly then proceeded to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital and later to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where similar refusal of immediate treatment is also alleged.

The suit claims the patient suffered cardiac arrest at about 12:50 a.m. and was later pronounced dead at Korle-Bu after more than two hours of being moved between facilities without receiving emergency care.

Dr. Amissah argues that her brother could have survived if timely medical intervention had been provided. Post-mortem findings cited in the suit indicate he died from severe blood loss and trauma-related complications.

The case follows findings of a government-appointed committee chaired by Agyeman Badu Akosa, which reportedly concluded that lapses in care at the hospitals contributed to the death and recommended disciplinary action against some healthcare workers involved.

The plaintiff also alleges that mishandling of the body caused additional distress to the family. The defendants are expected to respond to the suit within eight days after being served.
