A former Station Manager of Radio Univers, Dr Abubakari Sidick Ahmed, popularly known as Alhaji, has died at the age of 63.

He passed away on Monday, February 16, 2026, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, where he had been receiving medical care. His death was confirmed by his widow, Mrs Naziha Alhassan, during an announcement on Radio Univers. She said he died at about 10:15 a.m.

Dr Ahmed devoted more than three decades of service to Radio Univers, beginning as a student journalist and rising through the ranks to become Station Manager of the non-commercial, campus-based radio station of the University of Ghana. He is widely regarded as the longest-serving staff member in the station’s history.

His tenure was marked by discipline, mentorship and a strong commitment to excellence in campus broadcasting. Beyond the university setting, Dr Ahmed played a significant role in shaping Ghana’s media landscape, training and mentoring generations of journalists who have gone on to excel locally and internationally.

Although he stepped down from active management in 2025, he remained an influential presence within the Radio Univers community, offering guidance and serving as a repository of institutional memory for younger broadcasters.

He was also the former host of Behind the Headlines, a widely followed news review and analysis programme on Radio Univers.

In recognition of his decades of service, Radio Univers alumni organised a special dinner in his honour on June 6, 2025 — two days after his birthday. The event brought together colleagues, alumni and distinguished personalities from academia, the media and the judiciary.

Dr Abubakari Sidick Ahmed will be buried in accordance with Islamic traditions.
