Ghana and Sierra Leone have strengthened their diplomatic and economic ties by signing seven agreements during the inaugural Ministerial Session of the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) held in Accra.
The session, which took place on Thursday, April 23, 2026, was co-chaired by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Francess Piagie Alghali, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. It followed a two-day technical meeting held from April 21 to 22.
Speaking at the event, Mr Ablakwa described the PJCC as an important platform for transforming the longstanding relationship between the two nations into practical partnerships that drive economic growth and improve livelihoods. He emphasised the importance of implementing the agreements effectively to ensure real benefits for citizens.
He outlined key sectors for collaboration, including trade and investment, agriculture, energy, health, defence and security, as well as tourism and cultural exchanges—areas he said hold strong potential for job creation and economic development.
Mr Ablakwa also highlighted the history of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in times of health crises and natural disasters.
On her part, Mrs Alghali expressed gratitude for the warm reception given to the Sierra Leonean delegation and reaffirmed her country’s commitment to strengthening ties with Ghana. She noted that the PJCC reflects a shared ambition to build a more dynamic and mutually beneficial partnership grounded in solidarity and development.
The session concluded with the signing of one formal agreement and six memoranda of understanding spanning defence and military cooperation, electricity development and management, intelligence sharing, cocoa sector development, political consultations, tourism, culture and the creative arts, as well as health.
Senior government officials and technical experts from both countries participated in the meeting, which focused on expanding collaboration in areas of mutual interest. Both sides pledged to maintain engagement and ensure effective implementation of the agreed initiatives, describing the session as a significant milestone in Ghana–Sierra Leone relations.
