The Government has announced plans to recruit 7,000 teachers nationwide to strengthen the education sector and tackle staffing shortages, particularly in underserved communities.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a media briefing on Wednesday, April 1, where he outlined details of the upcoming recruitment exercise.

According to him, the application process will begin on April 10, 2026, when the recruitment portal is opened to qualified applicants. He noted that the Ministry of Education has secured approval from the Ministry of Finance to proceed with the hiring.

Graduates from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 cohorts are eligible to apply, with priority to be given to candidates willing to accept postings in deprived areas. He emphasised that the process will be conducted in a transparent and competitive manner.

The initiative is expected to create employment opportunities for thousands of trained teachers while improving the distribution of educators across the country.

In recent years, disparities in teacher deployment have remained a major concern, with rural communities facing significant shortages even as many trained teachers in urban areas struggle to find placements.
