The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU)-Ghana has announced that Prudential Bank Ghana Limited has suspended its plan to grant selective salary increases to about 55 employees after a sit-down protest by staff at the bank’s head office.

The protest, which involved workers from various branches, was sparked by allegations of unfair treatment and discrimination in the bank’s salary adjustment process.

Following hours of closed-door discussions between management and union representatives, ICU General Secretary Morgan Ayawine informed the protesting staff that management had agreed to suspend the selective pay increases while broader salary issues are reviewed.

“Management has graciously agreed to suspend the process,” Mr. Ayawine said after the meeting. “Although some 55 staff have already benefited, we have proposed measures to address that. Our demand is that the bank reverse the discriminatory pay adjustments.”

He also questioned the justification for the selective salary policy, noting that “it is not good to discriminate among ourselves. What do you even mean by critical staff?”

Mr. Ayawine further stated that, beyond halting the selective increments, the ICU will continue to advocate for the full implementation of the 15 percent general salary increase agreed upon with management at the start of 2025.

“The 15 percent is a bigger issue,” he said. “We need a permanent negotiation committee with management to resolve all outstanding matters.”

The ICU reaffirmed its commitment to fairness, transparency, and industrial harmony within the banking sector.
