Success in the Ghanaian music industry doesn’t happen overnight. Behind the glitz, hit songs, and sold-out shows are stories of grit, hustle, and street beginnings. Some of Ghana’s biggest music icons today had to fight their way from the bottom — with little support, no label, and just raw talent.
At KAKNEWS, we’re all about celebrating the journey. Here are 10 Ghanaian musicians who started from the streets and built their names brick by brick.

    1. Black Sherif
From Konongo Zongo to BET stage, Black Sherif’s come-up is a modern-day legend. With no major backing early on, he dropped freestyle after freestyle until “Second Sermon” exploded — and the world took notice.

🔊 Breakout Song: “Nothing I Get”

    🏆 Now: Award-winning, consistent hitmaker

    3. Kwesi Arthur
Coming from Tema, Kwesi Arthur literally couldn’t pay for studio time. He worked in a studio, slept on floors, and kept recording until “Grind Day” caught fire — and history was made.

The king of street rebrands. Once known as Bandana, he faded from the scene and came back years later with fire and fury — fully independent and street-certified.
    🔊 Breakout Comeback: “Dancehall King”

🏆 Now: Icon, businessman, and movement leader

    5. Medikal
Before the fame and flashy lifestyle, Medikal was a street freestyle beast from Sowutuom. He built his following song by song, collaborating with underground acts and working his way into AMG.

    6. Amerado
From Kumasi to Accra, Amerado’s lyrical fire earned him respect even when he didn’t have big media backing. He dropped consistent freestyles until “Yeete Nsem” became a movement.
    🔊 Breakout Series: “Yeete Nsem”

🏆 Now: One of the strongest new-school rappers

    7. Strongman
Strongman’s bars have always been elite. He battled through underground shows, freestyles, and reality shows before finally breaking into the mainstream — especially after his SarkCess Music days.

    8. Ay Poyoo
From comic skits to viral music, Ay Poyoo used humor, confidence, and social media to flip the system. “GOAT” wasn’t just a song — it was a strategy, and it worked.

    9. Kojo Cue
One of Kumasi’s lyrical generals, Kojo Cue built his brand with mixtapes, open mic shows, and community respect — eventually linking up with BBNZ Live and the likes of E.L.
    🔊 Breakout Project: “The Shining”

🏆 Now: Album-worthy artist with cult following

    10. King Paluta
This man stayed underground for years, consistently delivering freestyles and Asakaa-style street anthems. His 2024 and 2025 rise proves that staying patient with your sound pays off.
