Dr. Coleman Anani-Junior Adator, the Ada East District Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Coordinator, has urged residents to take early treatment seriously instead of waiting until the sickness worsens.

Dr. Adator urged the public to consider preventing HIV rather than curing it, even though there had been significant declines in cases recorded in the past four years.

He said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the status of HIV in the Ada East District.

He indicated that the district had, over the recent years, seen a decline in the number of HIV cases, saying 279 cases were recorded in 2021, 218 cases in 2022, 198 cases in 2023, and 191 in 2024, adding, however, that the data had not been fully completed.

He pointed out that the treatment in the Ada enclave was the most decentralised in the country, explaining that every health facility had available test kits that one could quickly access to know their statuses.

“Even those in the island communities do not need to cross the river before testing or treating HIV,” he said. He clarified that when someone contracts HIV and has unprotected sex, they could transmit it to their partners.

He also admonished the public to periodically test to know their status to protect themselves and others from contracting and spreading the disease. Meanwhile, about 5,000 persons are living with HIV in both Ada East and West Districts.
