Some traders in the Ashaiman market have shared divergent views on the annual celebration of Valentine’s Day, saying, despite the demands of their work, they find joy in the little things that make the Day special to them.

They said they show love through small gestures such as sharing a meal, offering kind words, or simply spending time with the family.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Ms. Esinam Mawutey, a fruit seller, said she sees the day as an opportunity to boost sales while spreading love.

“When it is Valentine’s Day like this, many people come looking for fresh fruits like apples, grapes, and strawberries; these are popular gifts because they symbolise sweetness and care, she said.

She said, despite the busy day, she ensures she shares some of her fruits with her family, saying, “After long working hours, I take some fruits home, and we eat together as a family.’’

Ms. Cecilia Adjetey, a fabric trader, said Valentine’s Day was a blend of business and family time, saying, “The red and white fabrics sell out quickly during this period because people want to sew beautiful outfits for the day.’’

She said after closing from work, she makes a special meal for her husband and children to eat together and share memorable stories, stressing that “it is not about big gifts for me; it is the time we spend that matters.’’

Ms. Mercy Ackon, chocolate and teddy bear seller, expressed the belief that Valentine’s Day was not just about material gifts but about showing appreciation and love to those around her.

“Even if my husband doesn’t buy me a gift, a simple ‘I love you’ means so much to me. Sometimes I surprise my children with chocolates just to make them smile,” she said.

She added that the period also meant a surge in business as many customers visit her shop to buy chocolates for their loved ones.
