The Council of Ewe Associations of North America (CEANA) has constructed a modern medical laboratory for the Akpokofe CHPS Compound in the Agotime-Ziope District, marking the first facility of its kind in the area.

The new laboratory is expected to significantly improve healthcare delivery by enabling accurate diagnosis and effective treatment through proper medical testing and investigations.

Funded by contributions from CEANA members, the project aligns with the group’s mission to support development and improve well-being in Eweland. The facility includes an operational space, offices, and other supporting infrastructure, and has been fully equipped by the area Member of Parliament, Charles Agbeve.

A former CEANA President, Dr. Peter Nat Abotchie, praised the MP’s efforts in making the facility functional, describing medical laboratories as essential to improving patient care and outcomes. He urged community leaders and health authorities to ensure proper maintenance to sustain its benefits.

CEANA’s Eweland Representative, Torgbui Agbelom Agbotokor II, also commended the unity and contributions of members, encouraging Ewes in Ghana to emulate such collaboration for collective development.

MP Charles Agbeve highlighted the broader challenges facing the health sector, noting that only a small percentage of facilities are well-equipped. He described Akpokofe as fortunate to benefit from the intervention and revealed that the CHPS compound now qualifies for the government’s free primary healthcare initiative, with a maternity block also under construction.

He further indicated that the facility could be upgraded into a health centre and serve as a referral point for about 12 communities with a population exceeding 6,000.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service, through its Volta Regional Director, Dr. Emmanuel Atsu Dodor, welcomed the initiative, stating that it complements ongoing efforts to enhance access to quality healthcare in the region.
