The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has opened an investigation into a viral video posted by an American citizen, Arianna Naomi Mackey, who claimed she was kidnapped and robbed by five masked men posing as police officers during a snap-check operation in Accra.

According to the CID, early findings show that the video was filmed at a hotel in Accra where Mackey and two others were lodging. The group checked out on December 5, 2025, the same day Mackey departed Ghana through Kotoka International Airport.

Police say attempts to obtain further information from Mackey have been difficult. She reportedly said she could not identify the alleged officers or recall the vehicle’s number plate. She also declined to provide the phone number of a friend who was with her, explaining that the person did not wish to be involved.

Investigators added that the video has since been removed from Mackey’s social media account, and efforts to reach her via WhatsApp have failed. The CID is now trying to contact her through formal diplomatic channels.

CID Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, emphasized that the Ghana Police Service views such allegations with utmost seriousness and is committed to establishing the truth behind the incident.
