IMANI Africa has submitted a Right to Information (RTI) request seeking comprehensive details about the government’s planned nationwide SIM registration exercise set for early 2026. The request, filed on Monday, December 8, 2025, was delivered to the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations and acknowledged by the Minister’s secretary.

The policy think tank is demanding information on the legal basis for the new registration programme, the technical and biometric systems to be used, procurement procedures, vendor selection, and oversight mechanisms. IMANI is also seeking clarity on data protection and privacy measures that will safeguard the personal information of citizens.

According to the organisation, the RTI request is intended to ensure transparency, accountability, and strong legal and technical safeguards as the government prepares to roll out the new SIM registration regime.
