The new Commonwealth Secretary-General, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, paid a courtesy call on King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth, at Windsor Castle.

The visit forms part of her official engagements following her assumption of office on April 1, 2025. She took over from Baroness Patricia Scotland and became the first African woman and second African overall to lead the 56-member organization.

During her assumption, the former Ghanaian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration pledged to uphold and promote the values enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter, particularly in a world increasingly shaped by geopolitical tensions and shifting alliances.

The Commonwealth, which spans continents, represents a third of the world’s population and more than a quarter of the United Nations membership, positioning the organization as a key player in global diplomacy and cooperation.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General’s meeting with King Charles is expected to strengthen the longstanding ties between the Commonwealth Secretariat and the monarchy further as she begins her tenure at the helm of the organization.
