The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in collaboration with the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR), has marked the National Climate Change and Green Economy Week celebration with a quiz competition for Senior High Schools (SHS) students in the Northern Region.

The quiz competition, which focused on climate change and environment, had Ghana SHS, Kalpohin SHS and Vitting SHS as participants.

It examined the students’ knowledge and appreciation of environmental and climate change issues and how they could actively participate in the fight to protect the environment for sustainable development. The competition, which was also supported by the Ghana Education Service, was on the theme: “Greening Education, Changing Mindset, Changing Lifestyle”.

Dr Emmanuel Tachie-Obeng, the Acting Director, Climate Change Unit, EPA, said the competition was to build students’ capacity to play leading roles in advocating for climate change adaptation in their schools and communities. He appealed to stakeholders to support the campaign and to encourage young people to participate in the advocacy drive, to help mitigate the impact of climate change in the country.

Mr. Michael Kwaku, the Regional Director-West Africa, INBAR, touched on the impact of climate change on livelihoods and society, saying there was need for supportive policies, technological innovations, research amongst others to tackle the negative challenges.

Mrs. Olivia Serwa-Opare, the Director of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education (STEM) at the Ghana Education Service, urged the students to educate others to protect the environment. The Ghana SHS emerged the overall winners of the competition and received cash prizes, plaques and citation while the other competing schools also received similar prizes.
