Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the renowned Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed away.

The news was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, in an interview with Myjoyonline.com. However, details surrounding the cause of his death have not yet been made public.

His passing comes just about a month after the death of Maame Tiwa, a prominent member and key figure of the Asomafo group, a loss that shook the gospel music community.

Yaw Sarpong had been unwell for several years and had occasionally withdrawn from public performances to focus on his health and medical treatment.

He is widely celebrated as one of the most influential personalities in the history of Ghanaian gospel music. As the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, he played a major role in shaping modern Akan gospel music, with the group becoming known for its strong lyrical depth, discipline, and sound rooted in Christian teachings.

Over the years, the group released several classic gospel songs, including Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa, many of which are still widely sung in churches across the country.

In recognition of his immense contribution to music, Yaw Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
