The government has introduced a new digital application aimed at advancing Ghana’s shift to renewable energy by simplifying the process for households, businesses, and institutions to enrol in the national net-metering programme.

Net metering enables consumers who use solar PV systems to feed surplus electricity into the national grid in exchange for energy credits, helping to lower their overall power costs.

Launching the platform in Accra on Thursday, Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, said the new web portal will streamline applications and help scale up solar adoption nationwide.

“This user-friendly portal will allow homes, businesses, and industries to request smart meters for both captive and renewable energy systems, while also enabling us to track all solar installations across the country,” he said.

He explained that the initiative forms part of Ghana’s broader push to diversify its energy mix, supported by the Government of Ghana, the African Development Bank, the Climate Investment Funds, and the Swiss Government.

Swiss Ambassador Simone Giger said the digital tool will enhance document submission, system monitoring, reporting, and data management—boosting transparency and accountability within the renewable-energy ecosystem.

Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Eunice Biritwum, noted that the new application will reduce administrative bottlenecks and improve coordination between key institutions, including the Energy Commission and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

African Development Bank Country Manager, Eyerusalem Fasika, highlighted the Bank’s US$27 million investment in Ghana’s renewable-energy programme, supporting the ongoing mini-grid PV and net-metering project.

The digital platform is expected to speed up national solar adoption and provide consumers with a more efficient route to clean, cost-effective energy.
