The Keta and Anloga Youth Parliament has convened its first sitting for the second parliament, marking the swearing-in of new members and an engagement with key stakeholders on critical issues affecting the two districts.
The sitting held at the Keta Municipal Assembly Hall inducted about 50 new members, including caucus and house leadership. This followed a comprehensive orientation, and seminar conducted the previous week to prepare members for their legislative responsibilities.
The newly elected Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Dan Sosu, in his opening address, urged members to remain committed to the principles of development in all parliamentary deliberations. He emphasised the importance of patriotism and cautioned against partisan political activities, which he said could hinder the core mandate of championing youth and community development.
Among the key stakeholders summoned to the sitting were Mr Dominic Yao Dzanado, the District Director of Education for Anloga, and Mr Gerhard Avudzi, the Municipal Education Director for Keta. The officials were invited to address concerns regarding the declining standards of basic education in the two districts and to propose strategies for improvement.
After the presentations, there were debates and resolutions passed on how best basic education can be promoted in the area, of which some included calling on parents and traditional authorities to support the efforts sand how to call on the various Assemblies to increase investment into educational infrastructure in the area.
The newly constituted parliamentary leadership consisted of the Right Honourable Dan Sosu as the Speaker, the First Deputy Speaker Right Honourable Dzidzor Elo, and the Right Honourable Benard Worlali Awumee as Second Deputy Speaker. The Majority Caucus is led by Mr Prosper Agbagli, Deputy Majority Leader: Mr Eric Nukpeza, Majority Whips: Irene Ashiagbor, Mr. Boglo Oliver, and Matina Ama
The Minority Caucus leadership included Honourable Fred Nuviadenu as Minority Leader, Mr Atsu Brown Kporxah, Deputy Minority Leader, and Minority Whips: Wonder Setsoafia, Madam Lucy Ayivor, and Godknows Ahiagba. Mr Francis Susuawu, the Keta/Anloga Districts Youth Director, was honoured by the Parliament with a citation recognising his resilience and consistent support for the initiative over the years. In his remarks, he praised the efforts of the previous parliament and their dedication in ensuring a smooth transition to the new leadership. He also encouraged the new leadership to leverage the institution’s influence to benefit not only the members but the entire community.
“The Youth Parliament is a powerful initiative that not only impacts its members but also serves as a catalyst for meaningful change in Keta and Anloga. The new leadership brings diverse skills and fresh energy, which must be harnessed to drive the development the districts deserve,” Mr Susuawu stated. Despite the successful inauguration of new members, the Parliament continues to invite interested youth from the Keta and Anloga Districts to register with the National Youth Authority (NYA) for future orientations and inclusion in the legislative body. This call aims to ensure broader youth participation in governance and community development.
The Keta and Anloga Youth Parliament remains dedicated to addressing pressing local issues and fostering youth involvement in policymaking, demonstrating its potential as a significant platform for grassroots leadership development.
