Researchers at the Distributed IoT Platforms, Privacy and Edge-Intelligence Research (DIPPER) Lab at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have achieved a major feat in IoT (Internet of Things) technology.

The research team, led by Dr. Bright Yeboah-Akowuah and Dr. Eric Tutu Tchao, has developed a novel antenna that would improve wireless communication for smart farming and healthcare delivery services.

This innovative antenna, known as ultra-wideband metasurface antenna, is designed to operate efficiently across a broad spectrum of frequencies.

Its capability ensures that IoT devices can transmit and receive data with enhanced reliability, even in resource-constrained environments.

In agriculture, this antenna can enhance the effectiveness of IoT devices for real-time monitoring of soil conditions, crop health, and weather patterns.

This advancement will empower farmers to make more informed decisions, optimize crop yields, and utilize resources such as water and fertilizer more sustainably, thereby bolstering food security and environmental conservation.

In healthcare, the antenna could improve IoT devices used for remote patient monitoring and managing long-term health conditions. This will translate to more effective and accessible healthcare services, particularly in remote and underserved communities.

The researchers are optimistic that with further development, this technology will pave the way for smarter and more sustainable solutions on a global scale.
