Graphic Online has gathered that the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) will have its long outstanding parliamentary primaries for the 168 constituencies where it has sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) on June 20, 2020.

The primaries have been outstanding since April 2020 due to the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) which culminated in the imposition of restrictions on movements and mass gatherings as a preventive measure.

The party has already selected parliamentary candidates for all other constituencies where it has no sitting MPs.

The June 20 primaries will, therefore, enable the party select the last batch of parliamentary candidates for the December 7, 2020 elections.

The primaries are expected to be held at the electoral areas and not the previous format whereby all the delegates met to vote at one place.

That, Graphic Online gathers is meant to prevent the congregation of many people at one place to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19.)

The National Council of the NPP on Wednesday met to trash out the details of the primaries.

The meeting which started around 3:30 pm was still ongoing as of 6 pm when this report was first published.

Present at the meeting were President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Chairman of the NPP, Mr Freddie Blay, Gen Secretary of the party, John Boadu, among other executives from both the national and regional levels.

Apart from the primaries, Graphic Online also gathered that other issues discussed at the meeting was whether or not to declare President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the flag bearer of the party by popular acclamation.

Later after the meeting, the General Secretary, Mr John Boadu issued a statement to confirm that the primaries will take place in 168 constituencies where the Party has sitting MPs to elect its Parliamentary Candidates for the 2020 General Elections on June 20, 2020.

The statement also confirmed that President Akufo-Addo has been accepted as the flagbearer of the party for the 2020 presidential election.
