The Saint Thomas Cathedral at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region has lined up series of activities to mark 30 years of becoming a diocese.

The church, which attained a Diocesan status in March 1995, has formed a committee to oversee the commemoration of the year-long celebration which ends in December, this year.

Speaking to the media after unveiling the 30th anniversary plaque at Obuasi, Rev. Father Francis Darko, the Cathedral Administrator, said the church had existed for over 100 years, but it was in 1995 that it was elevated to a diocese.

He said the church since then had chalked enormous successes and impacted lives, fostering development in communities and bringing Christians closer to God.

“We have also undertaken series of social interventions including the Saint Thomas school, supporting the needy and students through school, the social centre which has been hosting events, the Saint Thomas cooperative credit union has been providing financial support to SMEs,” he noted.

Again, he said the ‘One parish one student’ at the Catholic University had been embraced by the church and had seen a lot of students through school.

He commended all who played diverse roles for the attainment of Diocesan status by the church.

He said it was through their efforts that the Church had come this far and called on all and sundry to continue supporting the church to serve humankind.

Rev. Father Darko disclosed that the church had set out to establish Saint Thomas media to broadcast services and other activities of the church to the rest of the world.

“We believe this would enable us to win more souls for Christ and we call for more support to enable this to come into fruition,” he stated

Ms. Genevive Opoku Mensah, the Anniversary Committee Chairperson, said the committee had put in place series of activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary stressing the need for members to commit themselves to achieving the objectives of the committee

“Pilgrims of Hope, a Yearning for the Treasures of Heaven,” is the theme for the year-long anniversary.

It seeks to reflect, celebrate and look forward to the future with renewed hope and purpose and share its story with the local community and the diaspora.

On activities lined up for the celebration, she said, the Church intends to organise radio programmes on our faith (Monthly), youth & Valentine Day, outreach to delinquent members, crusade, special lenten retreat, Easter Monday mega games, financial freedom & business entrepreneurship.
