The Ghana Police Service in the Western Region has arrested three individuals and intercepted two Kia trucks loaded with substances suspected to be cannabis during separate intelligence-led operations in the Shama Municipality and the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
The first truck, with registration number GE 8965-12, was stopped at the Assorku Barrier around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday while travelling from Accra towards Takoradi. The vehicle was allegedly carrying bags of suspected narcotic substances hidden beneath sawdust. Although three occupants fled the scene, one suspect, Moses Kweku Tawiah, was apprehended.
Further intelligence from the initial arrest led officers to intercept a second truck, registration number GS 3368-17, at Nkroful Junction. That vehicle was also found to be transporting similar suspected substances.
In total, police retrieved 152 bales from both trucks, with each bale reportedly containing about 80 parcels of compressed substances believed to be Indian hemp.
Two additional suspects — Kwabena Forson, 55, and Isaac Kwame Kontor, 44 — were later arrested for allegedly attempting to bribe officers with GH¢69,000 to secure the release of the first suspect. The officers rejected the alleged bribe and detained the two men.
The Western Regional Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, praised the officers for their professionalism and warned that the police remain vigilant against drug trafficking activities in the region. Investigations are ongoing.
