President John Dramani Mahama, has asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to furnish him with a report on the status of investigations into killings that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

He said he had directed his Executive Secretary, Callistus Mahama to write to IGP Dr George Akuffo Dampare for a report on the status of investigations into these killings.

“So, I’ve asked my Executive Secretary to write to the IGP to give us a report on the status of investigations into these killings,” President Mahama stated in his address at the Moslems National Thanksgiving Service held on Friday at the National Mosque in Accra.

“Justice must be done and we also will ask the Attorney General when he takes office to determine fair and adequate compensation for the families of those who have lost their lives,” the President added.

The event, which was chaired by the National Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu was to thank Allah for a peaceful December 7 general elections. The President said that even though the 2024 general elections passed on peacefully, Ghanaians must recognize that a few of their citizens lost their lives.  “My understanding is that almost five of our citizens were killed in the process of the election,” he said.

“This is not the first time; in 2020 we know that eight of our citizens were killed. If this continues without justice being served, then what it does is, it breeds impunity.”

He said that was why, as a ruling party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had mentioned that investigation must be done to find out what led to those killings. The President said as Moslems offered their thanksgiving to God, they must remember that the end of elections marked the beginning of greater responsibility for all of them.

He said regardless of political affiliation; Ghanaians must work together towards their shared vision and the development and prosperity of Ghana; saying “our diversity as a people is not a weakness. Indeed, it is our strength.” “Whether we’re Muslims or Christians or from any other faith, our collective aspirations for a better future bind us together,” he said.

The President asked all the people to commit to fostering harmony and mutual respect in all aspects of their lives. The event was attended by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the NDC national Champion, Mr. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC and other leading figures of the Party.
