British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, saying he now wants to devote more time to his family after holding what he described as “the biggest job in the country.”

Speaking emotionally outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer paid tribute to his wife, Victoria, whom he described as a steadfast source of support throughout his time in office.

He said his priority going forward would be to be the best husband and father he can be, describing his children as his “pride and joy.” After concluding his remarks, he embraced his wife before returning inside Number 10.

Starmer assured the public that he would work to ensure a smooth and orderly transfer of power and pledged his full support to whoever succeeds him. He expressed confidence that the next leader would inherit a Britain that is stronger and fairer than it was two years ago.

The outgoing prime minister also thanked his friends, political allies, staff at Downing Street, and members of the civil service for their dedication and support during his tenure.

He revealed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision earlier in the day and had requested that the Labour Party National Executive Committee begin the process of selecting a new party leader.

Under the proposed timetable, nominations for the leadership contest will open on 9 July, with the process expected to conclude before Parliament’s summer recess, ensuring a new leader is in place before lawmakers return in September.

Starmer said he will continue serving as prime minister until his successor is chosen.
