At the 67th Grammy Awards, Tems made history yet again, winning Best African Music Performance for her song Love Me Jeje, the fifth track off her critically acclaimed album BORN IN THE WILD. The Nigerian singer-songwriter, known for her ethereal vocals and boundary-pushing artistry, delivered a heartfelt message following her win—one that speaks volumes about the evolving global perception of African music and talent.

In an exclusive interview with @blacvolta, Tems emphasized the power of authenticity and self-belief, saying:

“Africa is validated in itself! And for every young person out there, though the award is great, once you’re true to yourself, you attract it—you don’t chase it—by being authentic and staying true to your roots.”

Her words reflect a deeper sentiment—African artists no longer need external approval to define their success. The world is finally recognizing the richness of African music, but its value has always been inherent. For Tems, her Grammy win is not just about personal achievement but about reinforcing a powerful message: African creatives should embrace their uniqueness and let their artistry speak for itself.

Tems’ rise to stardom has been nothing short of phenomenal. From her breakout hit Try Me to global collaborations with the likes of Drake, Future, and Beyoncé, she has consistently showcased the depth of African talent. Winning a Grammy for Love Me Jeje—a song that draws from nostalgic African influences while blending contemporary sounds—proves that staying true to one’s roots can lead to global success.

This win also reflects a shift in the music industry, where African artists are not just participating but leading conversations. The Best African Music Performance category itself, introduced at the 66th Grammys, is a testament to the genre’s increasing impact on the world stage.

Beyond the awards and accolades, Tems’ message is a powerful reminder for young creatives across the continent. In a world where many chase trends, her words encourage them to remain authentic. True success, she believes, comes not from seeking validation but from embracing one’s identity and letting the world catch up.

As Africa continues to shape the global music landscape, Tems stands as a beacon of inspiration—not just for her artistry but for the philosophy she embodies. Her Grammy win is a celebration, not just of her talent, but of the limitless potential of African music and culture.

Congratulations to Tems on her well-deserved Grammy win! ???
