A destructive storm has swept through the Asukawkaw community, leaving a trail of destruction and thousands of residents without homes.
The strong winds, which hit the area on Wednesday, destroyed buildings, uprooted trees, and left many families stranded. Mr Mark Oduro, the Assembly member of the area described the scene as “apocalyptic,” with roofs torn off houses, walls collapsed, and debris scattered everywhere.
“I was inside my house, when the storm hit, I heard a loud noise, and the next thing I knew, the roof was gone. I was lucky to escape,” he stated. He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) the destruction was widespread, with entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble.
He further narrated that many residents were left to pick up the pieces, salvaging what they could from the wreckage. “I don’t know where I’ll go now, my house is gone, and I have no money to rebuild. I am worried about my children’s future,” Mr. Samuel Kwame Owusu, says a father of three.
Mr Oduro said as the people of Asukawkaw struggle to come to terms with the devastation, they are also counting their blessings. Despite the widespread destruction, there were no reported fatalities.
“We are grateful that no lives were lost, but we need help to rebuild our community. We appeal to the government and other organizations to support us in this difficult time.” Affected victims added.
