The Minister of Transport, Joseph Nikpe Bukari, has announced that an investigation has been launched into reports concerning the auction of more than 300 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses under the previous administration.
The Deputy Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit, Haroun Apaw Wiredu, earlier disclosed that the buses were sold in the period leading up to the 2024 general elections, with some allegedly going for as low as GHS2,500.
Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, January 19, the Transport Minister said a probe is currently underway to establish whether the auction process was carried out in a transparent and fair manner.
He explained that the MMT board is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the sales to determine whether the prices were justified. According to him, it is too early to conclude whether the buses were undervalued, but management and the board have been instructed to take a second look at the entire process before any further decisions are made.
The minister stressed, however, that the immediate focus of the government is to address the transport difficulties facing commuters across the country.
He said new measures are being rolled out in collaboration with transport unions to help ease the current challenges, expressing confidence that these steps will bring some relief to the commuting public.
