Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to securing lasting peace and stability in Bawku, a community plagued by years of violent conflicts that has claimed numerous lives.

He warned that the ongoing clashes between the Mamprugu and Kusasi communities could create an opening for terrorist infiltration in the border town, to further destabilise the region.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu made the remarks during an engagement with participants of the UK Advanced Command and Staff College (ACSC) Course 28, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. He stressed that all possible avenues were being explored to end the protracted conflict and restore calm in Bawku.

“Recently, there has been communal skirmishes in the northern part of Ghana, near the Burkina Faso border, but we are exerting every effort to ensure peace in that region. We must not permit the infiltration of terrorism,” he stated.

His Royal Majesty has played a central role in mediating the long-standing dispute between the rival factions in Bawku. The latest mediation meeting at the Manhyia Palace took place on April 28.

The conflict continues to be fueled by competing claims of legitimacy over the Bawku township. Given Asantehene’s successful resolution of the 16-year Dagbon chieftaincy impasse, there is widespread hope that his efforts will also bring a lasting solution to the Bawku crisis.
