The Western Regional office of the Trades Union Congress, Ghana (TUC), has organised a route March to sensitize the public on the invaluable contributions of women to societal growth.
The event formed part of their celebrations of International Women’s Day. The celebration was on the theme “For all Women and Girls: Right, Equality, Empowerment- The Role of Trade Union”. Mr Joshua Ansah, Secretary General, TUC-GH, said this year’s theme was a powerful reminder that gender equality was not a privilege but a fundamental human right.
He acknowledged the role and contribution women played in national development and encouraged them to strive for greater achievements in life and never to look down on themselves. He noted that TUC was committed in making sure that the rights of workers were protected to enable them deliver with full competence in their place of work especially women.
He called on the government to review and stiffen the labour laws especially to caution foreign investors who mostly trampled on our labour laws. Madam Harriet Botchway, Head of Department, Gender and Child Protection, said women empowerment was very essential and that equality and rights for women must be made paramount by national leaders.
She called on the government to rectify the ILO Convention 190 to address the challenges and harassment women faced in their line of work. She however urged women to take up roles and responsibilities that would propel them to greater heights.
Madam Salamatu Mahama Briamah, Executive Vice Chairperson (TUC-GH), commended women for their efforts in national development and charged them to take up leadership roles that would help them thrive in the corporate world. She entreated women to take pride in the fact that, for the first time in the history of our country a female has become the Vice President and urged all women to see her as a role model to aspire for greatness.
“Women are wonderfully made and are capable of accomplishing anything, therefore never look down on your ability as a woman, do well to aspire for greater successes “, she noted. Madam Rebecca Kwashie, National Women Council Chairperson, acknowledged the fact that women were multipliers and brought progress in whatever they did, therefore the need for women to be included in the decision-making process for growth and development.
Participants expressed happiness about the gradual progress women were making in society. International Women’s Day is a worldwide celebration observed to appreciate the achievements and successes of women as well as address their challenges in the quest to bridge the gender inequality gap.
