The Government has announced a major boost to the nation’s public transport system, with the first fleet of 100 new buses expected to arrive in March 2026.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, disclosed that the move forms part of a broader plan to add over 300 buses to the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) fleet within the year.

Speaking in an interview with Onua News, the Deputy Minister emphasised that the government is working to address the country’s transportation deficit.

“We have been to Egypt, India and Dubai to procure buses to augment MMT operations,” she stated.

She noted that the arrival of the first 100 mini-buses demonstrates government’s commitment to easing the transport challenges faced by commuters.

The initiative is expected to modernise public transit and reduce heavy reliance on trotro services ahead of the busy Easter festive season.

The new 29-seater buses are expected to feature advanced technological systems aimed at improving passenger experience and operational efficiency. These include onboard phone charging ports, a Tap n’ Go automated ticketing system for contactless transactions, and Real-Time Passenger Information Systems (RTPI) to enable commuters track arrival times and reduce waiting periods.

Additionally, the buses will be equipped with fleet telematics systems to monitor routes and analyse driver behaviour in real time.

Ms. Affo-Toffey outlined a strict maintenance framework to prevent the new buses from falling into disrepair, indicating that manufacturers and investors will be directly involved in maintaining the fleet for the first 12 months.

She added that MMT workshop offices nationwide will be equipped with spare parts to facilitate prompt repairs, while local engineers will undergo intensive training during the grace period to assume full technical management of the fleet.

The Deputy Minister further disclosed that engagements with the private sector have been successful, with additional privately financed buses expected to arrive between March and April.

She appealed for public patience and support as the government works to create a sustainable and appealing alternative to private car ownership under its transport sector reform agenda.
