The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results of school candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Per a statement released by the Council on Monday, December 30, 2024, a total of 4,108 candidates had their subject results cancelled, while the results of 781 candidates were withheld.

Those whose entire results were cancelled were 483 for possessing mobile phones in the examination hall while 209 had their entire results withheld for other suspected offences.

The exam management body has published the results online for candidates to access on its official website.

Further analysis of the results reveals a decline in performance across three core subjects—English Language, Integrated Science and Social Studies compared to the previous year.

Core Mathematics, however, showed no such decline.

The subject results of candidates from 319 schools have been withheld over allegations of collusion.

“These cases are still under investigation. The withheld results of these candidates may be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of the investigations”, the statement added.

The alleged malpractices include bringing foreign material such as prepared notes, printed material and mobile phones to the examination hall, collusion among candidates, and planned cheating which occurred with the connivance of some supervisors and school authorities
