Four hundred and twenty-two student leaders have been taken through a leadership training programme to equip them with the requisite skills and knowledge to impact others.

The students, who are from 27 private schools in the Ablekuma South and West municipalities in Accra, were sensitised to, among other things, importance of leadership and their role in nation-building.

The one-day annual Students Leadership Summit was organised by the Foundation for Generational Thinkers (FOGET), a youth development and life empowerment non-governmental organisation (NGO), in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Private Students (GNAPS) Zone Five.

    Equip

It has been set up to equip the youth to become generational leaders.

The leadership programme, which was on the theme: “Leave a Footprint”, was aimed to develop and equip young leaders, especially students, to positively influence their peers to facilitate the change they wanted to see.

Speaking at the event, the President of FOGET, Prosper Dan Afeti, described the programme as highly successful, adding that “the overall objective was to equip students to be better leaders in their various schools and to impact their world positively”

“I believe leadership does not just happen and we have to be intentional about how to develop and unearth their skills.

It is very important to prepare them at tender ages for them to be well-prepared for various leadership roles wherever they find themselves,” he said.

For his part, the co-Founder of Lead Afrique International, an NGO, Michael Ohene-Effah, assisted the students to understand the concept of leadership, qualities of a good leader and the need to develop leadership skills to lead others.

    Virtue

He said the organisation was very much focused on virtue as well as other aspects of the lives of the students.

In separate comments, some of the students commended the organisers of the programme, saying that it had gone a long way to expose them to things they did not know.

According to them, the programme had been beneficial to a lot of them, since it had helped to clear a lot of doubts in their minds.

Taking the microphone one after the another, the students pledged to exhibit various leadership characters such as being selfless, caring, loving, confident, creative and communicate effectively.

FOGET has over the years been holding career guidance programmes for final-year junior high school (JHS) students in and outside Accra.
