On December 1, 2022, MTN Ghana will begin disconnecting all SIM cards that have completed Stage 1 but not Stage 2 of linkage to Ghana card and those that have not gone through both stages.
MTN Ghana will deactivate the SIM cards of 5,701,149 subscribers.
As of November 26, 2022, 22,112,943 MTN Ghana subscribers had successfully completed Stage 1 (linking their Ghana card to their SIM cards), and Stage 2 (bio-capture) had been successfully completed by 16,411,794.
The move is in line with the directive that was given to all telecom operators by the National Communications Authority (NCA) at a meeting on November 17, 2022.
It said in a statement that it had already complied with the first part of the directive by, as directed, deactivating the data services on SIM cards that have not fully registered with the Ghana Card on November 20, 2022.
Customers should be aware that a fully registered SIM card has passed both Stage 1 (Linkage) and Stage 2 (Bio-capture) successfully.By completing the bio-capture procedure, all deactivated SIM cards can be reactivated within six months of December 1, 2022 (the date of deactivation).
The telecom giant added that if deactivated SIM cards are not reactivated by the end of May 2023, they will be recycled.
As a result, MTN urged all customers who are not fully registered to try to register as soon as possible at any of its service centers.
It stated that it would be willing to assist in getting customers back online and expressed concern regarding the difficulties the deactivation has posed for them.
It came to a close by reiterating its commitment to the national SIM registration exercise, which aims to create an accurate customer database and reduce fraud in the nation.
