A fire tender from the Weija Gbawe Division of the Ghana National Fire Service caught fire at Ghana Flag, a suburb of Kasoa, whilst dousing a flame that gutted over 10 container shops in the area.

The fire tender was supporting an earlier one sent when the incident happened, but it was immediately extinguished by the help of onlookers.

An officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said the tenders were outdated and needed replacement.

Investigation by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed that the Kasoa fire station was bedeviled with broken down fire engines since October 2023 and relied heavily on the Buduburam and Weija stations for assistance until it was recently repaired.

Meanwhile, the fire officer said that both the Buduburam and Weija fire stations were also faced serious challenges and were unable to control a high-level inferno.

The fire on Monday, September 2, was brought under control by three tenders from Kasoa, Buduburam and Weija.

Daniel Nasiru, a resident, said the water in the first tender dwindled few minutes after arrival, stating that he and other residents played crucial roles in bringing the fire under control.

Property worth thousands of cedis were reportedly lost to the fire, which destroyed several shops, including a furniture shop, an electrical shop, a wooden church structure, provisions shop and a few others.

Assemblyman for Joemends Kpormetey Electoral Area, Mr Mustapha Mohammed, commended the Fire Service and residents for their relentless efforts in extinguishing the fire.
