Mr Guggisberg Fiagbenu, the Assembly Member of the Adidome Central Electoral Area, in partnership with the District Command, Ghana National Fire Service, has initiated measures to remove debris and maintain a clean and safe environment in the area.

Mr Fiagbenu told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that hundreds of residents have been contributing to environmental pollution by pouring debris into opened drains, contaminating water bodies, and connecting their septic tanks to the gutters, causing them to become clogged.

These had resulted in an increased risk of cholera infections, adding that the situation was alarming, and immediate action must be taken to prevent the spread of the in their community, Mr Fiagbenu said.

“We are calling on all residents to take responsibility for their surroundings and ensure that their gutters are clean and free of debris”. To address this issue, Mr Fiagbenu had called for a thorough cleanup and issued a two-week ultimatum to individuals responsible for the pollution, warning them to clean their gutters and ensure hygienic conditions or face consequences from the relevant authorities.

“We will not tolerate any form of negligence or recklessness that puts the health of our community at risk,” Mr Fiagbenu warned and said those who fail to comply with the directives would face the full force of the law. The Assembly Member expressed concerns about the ineffectiveness of sanitation agencies in the town, which has hindered efforts to clear debris from the market and maintain hygienic business conditions.

He appealed to the various environmental and sanitation agencies, and Zoomlion Ghana to adopt the town’s hygiene procedures to prevent future outbreaks. “We need the support of all stakeholders to ensure that our community remains clean and safe, and since we cannot do it alone, we urge everyone to join us in this fight against cholera,” he said. Mr Fiagbenu has since, organied various clean-up exercises in the electoral area to ensure the well-being and sanitation of the electorates.
