Mr Ofosu Asamoah, the Executive Secretary, National Labour Commission (NLC), has urged journalists to always seek clarification on labour issues before reporting.

He said that would enable them to be well-informed and enhance their understanding for effective public education.

Mr Asamoah made remarks during the NLC’s engagement with the media on Dispute Settlement Procedures under the Labour Act, 2003 in Accra. The engagement offered journalists the opportunity to appreciate the work of the Commission and its progress since its establishment in April 2005.

He said the Commission had realised the limited knowledge of the public on its work, hence the need to engage with the media to enhance public sensitisation on its operations. “Over the years, we have experienced situations where discussions are initiated in the media in respect of labour issues, particularly where they are public interest disputes,” he said.

“Some of the commentaries by some media personnel suggest that they are ignorant of the work of the Commission or the dispute settlement processes as enshrined in Act 651, that is why we believe this forum is very crucial in creating understanding.” Mr Asamoah said the Commission viewed the media as an important partner to minimise the misinformation in times of industrial disputes and ensure that facts were disseminated.

Labour played a crucial role in economic affairs, hence the importance to effectively manage labour relations to facilitate national development. “Labour represents the human factor in producing the goods and services of an economy and so the effective management of this resource is fundamental to a country’s growth,” he said .

Dr Winnifred Nafisa Mahama, the Director, Information Services Department, advised journalists to prioritise accuracy and exercise diligence in their reporting on  Labour due to its critical nature and the risks posed by misinformation.

She urged the journalists to engage the Commission, verify facts, and cross-check information rather than relying solely on individuals or unverified online sources to create their stories.
