The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has engaged some stakeholders in the Volta Region on how best to address accidents on the road.

The Authority, led by its Director-General, Mr Abraham Amaliba engaged the Ghana Highway Authority, Driver Vehicle and License Authority, the Department of Urban Roads, Department of Feeder Roads, and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

The Authority also paid a courtesy call to the Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu. Mr Abraham Amaliba, Director-General of the NRSA said effective collaboration between the various stakeholders was necessary to deal with the menace of accidents on the road.

He said the statistics showed that road crashes in the country continued to increase and this required some concerted efforts to address. The Director-General said road safety was a shared responsibility and that it was important for all stakeholders to come on board to ensure that drivers and other roads users complied with the safety protocols.

Mr Amaliba said the Authority wanted to pursue a new vision to regulate the roads which aimed to ensure there was full compliance with road safety measures to   reduce accidents to the barest minimum. Mr Amaliba expressed concerns about the congestion on Ho market roads, noting that it was not best for safety.

He appealed to the Regional Minister to engage the Municipal Assembly to take necessary measures to decongest the road for vehicular traffic. The Director-General thanked the Minister for allocation of the new office to the Authority at Adaklu to carry out its operations effectively.

Mr Amaliba said the Authority identified Ho-Fume Road, Sogakope-Aflao road, and some areas within the Ho Municipal including Data Link as accident prone areas. He asked the MTTD to ensure full enforcement of the road safety regulations to reduce accidents on the road.

Mr James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister said the Volta Regional Coordinating Council would continue to provide the necessary support to the NRSA in the discharge of its duties. He said the Regional Coordinating Council would be having stakeholder engagement to decongest the market roads, noting that the situation was not good for vehicular movement.

Mr Gunu underscored the need for continuous road safety campaign and enforcement of the road safety regulations to minimise incidents of accidents on the road. The Minister congratulated Mr Amaliba on his appointment as the Director-General of the Authority and he was optimistic that Mr Amaliba would reset the National Road Safety Authority to deliver effectively on its core mandate.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Wisdom Akorli, Volta Regional Police Commander, said the police would continue to do their best to ensure safety on the road.

He asked the NRSA to intensify the road safety campaign, saying this would help reduce the situation. Other stakeholders present at the engagement pledged to do their best to ensure safety on the road.
