Mr. Gabriel Kyere, the Berekum Municipal Manager of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), has announced that 125,000 residents have so far been registered under the scheme in the municipality.

This figure, he said, represents 95 percent of the municipality’s 2025 registration target of 131,000, expressing confidence that the full target would be achieved by the end of the year.

Mr. Kyere disclosed this during a public sensitisation engagement organised by the Bono Regional Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in Berekum as part of its “NHIA Storm Project” campaign.

The campaign seeks to encourage residents to renew their NHIS membership and attract new enrollees. As part of the initiative, NHIA staff embarked on a procession through Berekum’s principal streets, interacting with market women, traders, and commercial drivers to raise awareness about the importance of health insurance.

The Bono Regional Director of NHIA, Mr. Isaac Badu Amponsah, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to making quality healthcare accessible to all Ghanaians. He said the campaign would help address operational challenges affecting the scheme’s effectiveness.

Mr. Amponsah further mentioned that the government had established the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to expand NHIS coverage to include kidney failure, heart diseases, cancers, strokes, and other chronic illnesses.

He also cautioned health service providers against charging illegal fees to NHIS clients, stressing that such practices undermine public trust and the scheme’s integrity.
